I have worked in the education industry for 29 years – in both urban and suburban environments. I have a M.Ed. from Emory University in Science Education, a M.Ed. from Kennesaw State University in Educational Leadership, and a B.S. from Kennesaw State University in Science Education. Additionally, I was a NBCT in AYA/Science until it expired in 2011 (National Board Certified Teacher in Adolescent Young Adult/Science).
For 12 of those years, I taught various high school science courses and held several leadership positions including department chair and some fun positions such as Assistant Band Director, Basketball Drill Team and Flag Corps Sponsor and of course Cheerleading and Prom sponsor.
The next 13 years I worked at a suburban district office in Georgia with approximately 33,000 students and 3,500 teachers and 33 schools. While there, I held various titles and positions including Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction, Director of Instructional Technology and Grants, Director of Professional Learning, Science/Health Director or Coordinator/Specialist, Math Coordinator, and became a state-certified CTAE Director. During the time I served in these roles, I wrote and received over $5.2 million dollars in grants! Additionally, I was in charge of the professional learning and other budgets which often were over $125,000. During my personal time, I wrote two books for Walch Publishing – Top Shelf Anatomy & Physiology and Top Shelf Differentiated Instruction for Science.
The next 4 years I worked in a very large urban district office in Georgia with approximately 112,000 students and 8,500 teachers and 112 schools. While there, I held the position of Supervisor of Professional Learning and Title IIA. I was also in charge of the budgets for this large district totaling approximately $4.2 million annually. During the time I served in this role, I was able to keep the large budgets balanced without cutting the amounts schools received by strict accounting and budgeting – even in light of excess cuts of approximately $70,000 yearly due to Federal reallocations. I also brought a lot of new digital technology to the district such as using data to drive all the Professional Learning decisions and also using an app to schedule over 800 sessions in 16 buildings for each of the District Professional Learning Days. Large scale professional learning and training became common place since there were over 750 teachers hired annually and I scheduled the four days of training and 56 instructors. Collaboration with my colleagues was key to succeed in this role.
I look forward to using my expertise and background in broad field science, writing, technology, grant administration and writing/budgeting and professional learning to design full-scale programs to help meet your district and/or school needs!
